July 30th Update Postponed Until Further Notice

It’s Wednesday yet again but Funcom has announced that today’s patch has been postponed until further notice. Although the plan is to shoot for the update to go live by the 31st (tomorrow), Funcom cannot guarantee this since it has decided that ensuring this patch is fully tested is much more important than rushing it out the door. I, for one, agree with them. Famine writes:

“Greetings,

The planned update for tomorrow (Wednesday) has been postponed until further notice for additional testing. The current plan is to shoot for the update on Thursday, July 31st after additional testing has been completed.

Zero Punctuation Reviews Age of Conan

Zero Punctuation has finally reviewed Age of Conan (I say finally because we all knew it was coming sooner or later). For those who are new to Zero Punctuation, it is basically a videogame review webcast by a man named Yahtzee who speaks very fast and is very particular when it comes to his games. His review style can best be summed up by one word: comical. Enjoy!

Pet AI Fix Incoming Next Week

For those of you who have pets in-game, you may have noticed that this patch did not repair the issue with pet ai that was introduced with last week’s patch. This issue occurs when players lose control of their pets, resulting in pets that do not attack. Pets that do not respond are simply useless.

Funcom is aware of this issue and has issued a statement promising that a fix would be put in place next week, on July 30th. This “fix” will not only repair the new issues with pets but will improve the overall AI of pets. In fact, pets should work better than they ever have before after next week’s patch.

Official July 23rd Patch Notes

It is finally July 23rd and that could only mean one thing: a new Age of Conan patch! The patch notes have been revealed and it seems that Funcom has decided to focus on the technical issues with Age of Conan instead of content. In my opinion, this is a very smart choice.

Funcom reports that this patch should fix “several memory leaks”, including the one that causes the very common gray map bug. In addition to this, Funcom has reset all characters feat training status in light of the recent changes made to classes.

Tarib, Funcom’s senior community manager, writes:

“Today’s update is aimed at helping address some of the memory leak issues that some users have been experiencing. This is a smaller than usual update as we are focusing on testing the upcoming batch of new content changes and additions that we currently have scheduled for next week. We know that the memory leak issue was affecting users game experience though and we didn’t want to hold it back due to the testing on the other content so have decided to roll it out today on it’s own. Please note we are still looking into this issue as a priority and will be continuing to optimize this in future updates as well.

Buddy Keys Now Available… for Some People

Yes! It’s finally here! We can all finally use our buddy keys! … wait. No, no we can’t.

Tarib has announced that buddy keys have finally become available; however, there is a pretty big catch with this announcement. Although every single AoC subscriber received a buddy key with their purchase, along with the promise that they would be able to invite a friend to venture into the world of Hyboria, it seems that Funcom is a bit biased towards the majority of AoC subscribers.

While Funcom promised that buddy keys would become available a short while ago, they neglected to mention that they would become available to collector’s edition owners only. That’s right, instead of making the keys available to everyone, as promised only a week ago, Funcom has decided that only those who purchased the collector’s edition should have the right to use the buddy keys that are already over 8 weeks late.

AoC Moviewatcher’s Club: Meph’s No Gimmicks- Part 2

Mephs has gained a bit of a reputation in the Age of Conan community for being a guru on Assassin and melee PvP tactics after his melee tutorial video and his first PvP movie: No Gimmicks.

Well, Mephs is not one to disappoint so he has released a brand new video entitled No Gimmicks: Part 2. This video has all of the action of the first video and more, such as the very entertaining sing-a-long at the beginning of this movie (great job on this guys!). Mephs writes:

“By no means am I out to show anything more than that there’s more to AoC PvP than walking up to people and hitting 2 buttons, underneath that exterior is an engrossing and robust combat system that, when taken advantage of, can make even the most “gimp” of classes a powerhouse. While I’m constantly told I should roll another class that is more powerful, I’m constantly drawn to using an underdog character to make my claim.”

Funcom Update Commentary- July 17th

funcom logoFuncom has decided to institute a brand new practice of including an update commentary with all updates from now on. This commentary will serve as a bridge between subscribers and the developers as Funcom attempts to open up more lines of communication. This is a great addition to the update process since players will now get a glimpse at what exactly motivated the many changes made to the game through patches.

Tarib writes:

“With this week’s update we wanted to start a new tradition in providing a more detailed commentary of the reasons behind the changes in the updates on the live servers. So welcome to the first update commentary where we will provide a little insight into the current update priorities and explain how we are looking to further improve the game experience for everyone.

Update focus

The focus of this update was to ensure that we could continue to resolve a good deal of the inconsistencies that we can see have been affecting the game-play and at the same time improve on some of the existing game systems so that they are more accessible and more intuitive. So this update sees a good few changes intended to deal with some of the most frequently raised queries from the community.
